Farmington Avenue Streetscape

The first phase of the Farmington Avenue streetscape project was completed from Marshall Street to the vicinity of Denison Street in the Spring 2016. The City received state funding totaling over $11 million to help complete the streetscape to its western limit at Prospect Street.

With these funds, the City secured the services of a consulting engineer, Beta Group, with subcontractors FHI, Inc. and Toole Design Group, to complete the design and prepare construction documents. The design includes curb bumpouts to shorten pedestrian street crossing distances, new curbs and sidewalks, decorative lighting, bicycle facilities, landscaping, and traffic signal upgrades.

The project was bid out in Fall of 2023 and awarded to Nunes Construction. Construction activities began in 2024 and will continue into 2025. A general construction update for April 2025 is below.

PROJECT AREA - Farmington Ave from Prospect Ave to Dennison St.
In 2024, the project team completed most of the construction work between Prospect Ave and Whitney St. In 2025, most of the construction work will be focused between Whitney St and Dennison St. Some activities may still occur throughout the entire corridor.

  • Activities in April will likely begin on the north side of Farmington Avenue at Girard Avenue and will head east. The work will include sidewalk replacement, curbing, and electrical work.
  • Working hours are generally 7am-5pm between Monday through Friday. There may be some level of noise and heavy equipment use during working hours. To the extent possible, the contractor will work outside of morning and evening peak traffic times.
  • Street detours and parking restrictions may be present along the active areas of construction.
  • Transit stops may temporarily shift during construction depending on sequencing / active work.
